This was said by a colleague after I'd endured an excruciating bereavement of widowhood and then started a new relationship. Her meaning was J had "cleared my path for A" my meaning was "J didn't die so I could get together with A, he died coz he had a heart attack". This conversation fragment has embedded itself into a permenant part of my memory.
I concluded that what is well meant, is often illthought.
