The humanities continue to be undermined by funding cuts and demands to center education on strictly defined workplace roles. In my March 19, 2023 talk, “Getting Our Priorities Straight: Humanities and the Art of Living,” I draw on my experience as a high school dropout turned humanities professor to argue that the humanities offer college students and lifelong learners invaluable lessons in the art of living lives of intention and excellence.
Paid subscribers have access to the complete talk while free subscribers can view an excerpt.
Clips of the video lectures are available for public viewing on TikTok. I also invite readers interested in the value of the humanities to explore the previous pieces below.
Upcoming Talk
On Sunday, April 7, 2024, I will deliver a talk titled, “Daring to Dream in a Fatalistic Society: How the Humanities Can Sustain Our Social Change Efforts” at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brevard, in West Melbourne, Florida.
Each day we are inundated with media pundits and politicians who proclaim, in a tone of divine certainty, what is and is not possible—who has a “real chance” of getting elected and who has “no chance.” To be “serious” about politics and social change, we are told, means sobering up to these “practical realities.” What too many of us fail to realize, I will argue, is that many of these assertions are intended to manufacture what they claim to predict. By tapping into the creative, spiritual, philosophical, and historical works and idealism of the humanities we can empower ourselves to imagine and enact social justice and transformation.
